‘Falmouth for orders’ was universally understood by countless generations of seafarers who in the days before modern communications were in no position to decide where to land and sell their cargo. For centuries, all the reasons that had made Falmouth an ideal Royal Mail Packet Station, made it equally suitable as a first and last port of call for commercial sailing vessels and early steamers. Falmouth Docks, whose development began in the mid-nineteenth century, continue today to provide an important maritime service. The town has its own 2-campus university offering under- and post-graduate degree courses in art, design and media.
