‘Just like America without guns.’ This Canadian joke is wide of the mark. Although Canada’s constitutional links with the United Kingdom, its membership of the Commonwealth and its close cultural links with France distinguish it from the USA, it is also about one hundred times less densely populated. This makes for a very different country from its southern neighbour, a pristine wilderness. When the fall comes to those northern latitudes, bears have to build up their fat supplies for the winter hibernation. Salmon in their tens of thousands battle their way up river against the current to spawn in the very stretch of water where they themselves were spawned. For the bears and other predators and scavengers this is the time of plenty.
