ECUADOR – BAÑOS &
AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOES

Ecuadorians have an intimate and fairly easy-going relationship with vulcanism. Farmers go about their daily lives tending their crops growing at high altitudes in mineral-rich volcanic ash under the shadow of brooding, smoking volcanoes that frequently erupt. The avenue is actually a long valley that runs between two parallel mountain ranges, the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Oriental that together comprise the Ecuadorian Andes. Baños is a spectacularly sited town hemmed in by towering peaks and is the gateway to the upper Amazon basin.
